The P Word

He had called her non-possessive in one passing conversation. But he hadn’t meant it as a compliment.

She well knew the distinction between a friend and a boyfriend. But she didn’t know what was accepted and not accepted in a relationship that stood in the middle. Theirs wasn’t the typical friendship. Both had conceded, at different points in time, that the word “friendship” in their  context was at best a compromise.

Each of them had picked the life they led. They had no idea what that meant in the larger scheme of life.

What he also didn’t know was that he’d have no inclination to talk to her, had she indeed been possessive!
